What is a Doula?
The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves”. It is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother and her support people before, during and just after birth. A doula can also provide emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend births, labors can be shorter, have fewer complications, and result in babies who are healthier and breastfeed with greater success. (www.dona.org)
Fort McMurray Doula Association (FMDA)
The Fort McMurray Doula Association was created to be a resource for people to find and meet local Doulas who are happy to support you and your decisions during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.
As Doulas we are active members in the community and provide a free community program called Birth Choices. Birth Choices is a series of Prenatal Information Sessions held at The Hub (10020 Franklin Avenue) on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm.
We are always looking to have Doulas join our group. If you are interested in being a part of our organization please email us.
